Our current read aloud for the middle kids (ages 8 and 10) is The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. This is a wonderful book that will stretch your kids’ vocabularies and offers the opportunity to learn about a lot of different animals---with a little prior prep, you could easily do a unit study!
In addition to meeting Mole, Ratty (the water rat), Otter, Badger, and seeing Toad in passing, there are many animals mentioned in the first chapter. Here is a list of most of the animals mentioned to get you started on some rabbit trails:
- European water vole (water rat)
- Mole
- Badger
- Toad
- Stoat
- Weasel
- Fox
- Otter
- Little Grebe (dabchick)
- Kingfisher

Do you notebook? I’ve created 4 free sets of notebooking pages your children can use in their narrations about Mole, Ratty, Badger, and Toad. You might used them to summarize the story, write about a scene from the book, or share some research on the real life animals.
Each set has 5 different layouts to choose from, featuring:
- full-color photos
- different width lines for writing on
- picture boxes for drawing a scene from the book
- a primary page where kids Pre-K to 1st grade can copy the character’s name and draw a picture
Here are examples of the different layouts. Click on the thumbnails to go download the Free Mole, Water Rat, Badger, and Toad Notebook Page Packets:
