This Blog is An Archive And Has Not Been Updated Since 2018

9.27.2021: Google very recently changed drive links for security reasons, so you may find that when you click on a link for one of my printables that you need to submit a share request. PLEASE only submit one share request per item! These have to be manually confirmed and I will get to them when I get to them. I promise you that sending me 12 requests in rapid succession will not make that happen faster, lol! I do not sit on my computer waiting around to send people instant shares of freebies. Thank you so much for your patience as I try to sort out this latest Google mess.

Picture Book Club for ages 2-8

This year I’ll be leading a Picture Book Club for our local homeschool group and I thought it would be fun to share my plans with y’all so you can join us!picture book club plans for ages 2-8

This club is designed for ages 2-8 and will be meeting once a month.  Our group will not be meeting in December or January---because we’ve found from experience that those meetings always seem to end up getting cancelled due to prior commitments and illness, so the overall plan is for 8 months.  But you are free to finagle the schedule however it fits your group!

While this was originally created for a group situation, you could very easily incorporate the book list into your family’s read aloud schedule and just do it  independently. Each month, I plan to post an update on how the group is going and provide links and additional free resources for crafts and related activities.

Each month is built around a theme:

  • Rhyming Books
  • Around the World
  • Animal Tales
  • Tall Tales and Fairy Tales
  • Aesop’s Fables
  • Myths and Legends
  • Stories of Art
  • Silly Stories

We will be doing these themes in order, but you could mix them up if you wanted.  Each month also has an optional Scriptural memory verse that highlights a positive character trait.

This is how I will be running our group’s meetings:

  1. Snack and read aloud
  2. Short physical activity/game (to get the wiggles out!)
  3. A craft related to the theme or one of the books

Those children who have chosen to do the memory verse can take turns reciting it while everyone is working on their craft.

Participating families will take turns providing the snacks and crafts.

As I mentioned, I plan to link to some possible craft/activity ideas here.  I’m also thinking about creating copywork of the memory verses and printable templates to use as  “notebooking” pages for recording each month’s activities (something like a keepsake to put into a portfolio).

2013 picture book list CaptureFor now, you can download your copy of the 2013-2014 Picture Book Club reading list and memory verses here.  A note about the books---most all of these are readily available in our local library system and through Amazon.  A couple of the books are out of print, and that has been noted on the list (OOP).  A suitable alternative has been noted for one and for the other I think you can come up with a good silly book. Winking smile

Take a gander at some of the books (this is an affiliate widget and yes, I might earn a commission if you purchase through my affiliate links):

  1. Are you doing it as one group or breaking up the ages? In my experience, book club with toddlers is very different than book club with elementary kids.

  2. Agreed. In an ideal world, we would have a 2-4 group and a 5-8 group, but circumstances keep me from splitting the group this year (I'm hoping we'll be able to do that for future years). We also have an older kid book club that I'd like to see split. Baby steps. ;)

  3. I am so excited to find this post as I just stopped by from the FB group to see how you have your blog set up. I was just sketching out ideas in a notebook the other night for doing something similar to this and your ideas will be a helpful addition to mine. THANKS!

  4. You are very welcome, Martianne! I'm glad it was helpful to you. :)

Thank you for joining the conversation!
