Homeschooling is Hard

Pinteresting pictures of fantastic learning projects and rahs rahs of how wonderful it all is have led more than one struggling parent to feel like they must be doing it wrong.  It may be easy some days, but it’s not always easy.

Just because it's hard doesn't mean you are doing it wrong. Many worthwhile things are hard. Homeschooling Hearts & MindsRaising kids is hard work.

Teaching them is hard work.

We pay teachers in schools real money for doing what they do and many complain that they don’t get paid enough. Don’t underestimate what you are giving your kids.  Your choice has real, possibly life-changing value, yes.

But it is also hard.

I don’t really understand the tendency to minimize the difficulty.  It’s a little like the books on childbirth that say that labor and delivery doesn’t need to be painful.

Not in my experience, lol.

Are we afraid that being upfront and honest about the challenge will turn people away from doing it?  Maybe it would.  But then maybe that is not a bad thing.  What is wrong with letting people make their decisions with real information, rather than glossy, colorful highlights of just the good stuff?

And what is wrong with letting people who are struggling know that we, too, are struggling (at least part of the time)?

It’s worth it to do hard things.

There may come a time when you hang up your homeschool hat, but don’t do it because it’s hard.

No one ever said that this vocation would be easy.  That doesn’t mean that you are in the “wrong business,”  or are doing it wrong

It does mean that you need a little grace and encouragement.

How can I encourage you today?

  1. Thank you so much for writing this. I am four months into homeschooling with my son and daughter who are 5 and 7, after taking them out of public school. I thought it was going to be so much easier! It really helps to know I am not alone in the particular challeges unique to homeschooling. I am realizing the incredible responsibility I have signed on to, and these websites like yours have been the most needed blessing. God bless you!!!!

    1. Thank you, Amber! I'm happy that this post spoke to you. Even though I've been homeschooling for 8 years, I still have days that I doubt and want to pack it in. It is hard, but so worth it. Blessings to you on your journey with your kids. :)
