Setting Goals in Our Homeschool, the Kiddos Have Their Say

At the beginning of each new year, I ask each of the kiddos about their dreams and goals for the year.  It’s become a tradition, something that I started when we made the cross country trip a couple of years ago, because, well…

it’s easy for me, the teaching mama, to get so wrapped up in my own goals for them that I can forget they have their own goals, their own dreams.

So each year I ask them what they want to learn more about and what they would like to personally accomplish.  And I do my best to give them any help they need to reach those goals.

So from youngest to oldest…

Emma (age 2) was mum on this subject.  We’ll try again next year. ;0)

Peter (age 6)

  • Wants to learn
    • about dragon myths and everything else about dragons
    • how to take care of monsters
    • how to bake and how to put stuff in the oven
    • how to draw realistically
    • how to not be bad
    • how to tame a dinosaur
    • how to be serious
    • how to be a bunny
    • how to be a dragon
    • how to make computer games
    • how to be a ghost
    • how to let David have a turn
    • how to be a Peter
    • how not to steal milk

As you can see, learning how to be serious may prove to be a serious challenge. :0)

Mary (age 8 next week)

  • Wants to learn
    • all about hamsters (she may be getting one for her birthday)
    • all about white tigers
    • how to crochet (she learned how to knit this year)
  • Wants to
    • improve her knitting
    • make a scarf for Peter
    • master the guitar

David (age 11)

  • Wants to
    • learn about anteaters
    • figure out why people build towers instead of underground…aren’t underground buildings more resistant to hurricanes, tsunamis, tornadoes, and volcanoes?
    • make plans to build something out of something
    • learn how a jet engine works
    • understand why Einstein said that it’s impossible to go faster than the speed of light
    • learn more about Tesla (the inventor, not the rock band)
    • to learn how to cook his favorite foods
    • write well
    • learn how to make computer games

Sounds like it’s going to be a busy year in our homeschool!

What would your children like to learn about this year?

  1. What a wonderful idea! We sat down as a family last Jan. 1st at breakfast and set goals for the year...but a wonderful idea to focus on what they would like to learn, too!

  2. I've found that talking about and making plans to learn the things that interest them renews their interest and helps them to invest in their education. Some of these topics are things that I will work into studies and others are things that I'll encourage them to pursue on their own.

  3. Hmm, I'd also like to learn how to take care of monsters and how to be a dragon. ;-) This is really a good idea though for goal setting.

  4. Yes, I think that taking care of monsters is probably a really good skill to have. ;0)
