Tuesday’s Toolbox: A Tape Measure

Tuesday's Toolbox button

Why is it that no matter how many rulers I buy, I can never find them when we actually need them? Do you think it has anything to do with the boys using them as swords? (Here’s a tip: never let them whack your leather sofa with a metal edged ruler.)

And why is it that when there’s only one, two children cannot share it without snipping at each other? But I digress. After listening to Mary and David fight over the ruler, I gave in and let Mary use my dressmaking tape measure.

tape measure graphic Do you see what I see…a super long number line! The kiddos were measuring distances with a ruler and then adding them up. A little hard for the kindergartener, but with her tape measure, she was able to confidently add it up. Another tool to add to the ole toolbox.

  3. Thank you, Janet!

In answer to your question: I created my drop down menus at the top of my blog about a year ago (handy, aren't they?) using a tutorial I found on-line (my html is a little rusty).

Unfortunately, that particular tutorial is no longer available. You can probably Google "drop-down menus" or "tab bar" and find something similar, but I've been told recently that Blogger has added a page feature (go to your dashboard, then select "edit posts," you'll see a link under those main tabs at the top called "edit pages"). Apparently, when you add pages, Blogger will automatically create a menu for you at the top that links to those pages. I haven't tried it yet, but you might give it a go. Good luck!

  5. My students were arguing over rulers last week. Everyone wanted a blue one...note to self....order them all the same color!

  6. Of course, after I posted this, I found no fewer than 3 rulers! All different, actually. My children like to "own" a few things (they share most everything), so having ownership over a few school supplies makes them happy.

When my ds was in school, the students were required to supply just about all their school supplies, including rulers, crayons, scissors, glue, glue sticks... In K, each child kept everything in one of those family size ice cream "buckets" (no lid) in a cubby.
